Lowell,
Greetings from Britton, South Dakota on a brisk, wintry morning on the prairie! I live in the
Britton area and would be willing to do some look ups as time and WEATHER permits. [As
you remember, everything here revolves around the weather!] I have on occasion answered
emails on this site with phone numbers and addresses. I would be happy to help out on
occasion as a random act of kindness. Thank you for this site.
Sincerely,
Kay Marie

Your site is a great service! Thanks for all you've done. I tried sending this question to

Thanks so much!

Judy,
I found these records on this website. Do you know what years these are for? I also
wondered about the following entries. The coordinates are very close, but the
townships are different. Are they close together?
Thanks so much for your help. I am fairly new at all this.
Also a big thanks for donating this info for all of us to use.
Take care,
Shannon

Hi Shannon,
I believe the land records are from about the time of Langford's
beginning, which was 1896. The Thole property in Hickman township was
owned by Emile Thole until he passed away about a year or so ago. I seem
to remember that he also had some land up in the Lake area East of there
which could have been in Red Iron Township, but I am not sure of that.
Emil Thole lived in a home adjacent to our back yard during my
pre-school years in the early 1940s. He had a son Dennis (later became
Buffington when his mother remarried)about my age. Are the Thole's your relatives?
There were a number of Farrar's on the roles of the Methodist Church in
Langford and their was still a Farrar's drug store during my Grade
School years.
You can see the Township layout of Marshall County on the Map at:
Marshall County Map
You will have to scroll down about three pages to get to the Map. You
will see that Hickman and Waverly touch each other at one corner.
Thanks! Lowell

JOSLIN/HERRON/HANSON -Update and correction
My birth father ROBERT RICHARD JOSLIN was raised in AMHERST, SD. His name at birth
was JACK HERRON, he was placed in an orphanage or children's home in or near Sioux Falls,
SD shortly after birth on JANUARY 23, 1920. He was adopted by ROBERT 'ROY' AND
BESSIE (SMITH) JOSLIN, of Amherst. His brother DONALD JOSLIN was also adopted. His
birth name was ROBERT GEORGE HANSON/HANSEN. He was born in 1918. They lived in
AMHERST until 1934 when they moved to MICHIGAN. Bessie ran a "boarding house" after
Roy died in/around 1929. Would love to know there is family out there looking for any of
these people. Also, would love to know the "nationality" of the name HERRON.

Lowell,
You have obviously put in a lot of work into this page. Thank You from
one that has been searching for different parts of his family for many
years. I know this is a lot of work to put together. You must love what
you do. Marshall County must be special to you.
Since my query I have obtained additional information on my Nathan W.
Coppock. Nathan was my Great Grandfathers (Oliver D. Coppock) brother. I
found Nathan in the 1885 territorial census. A little more seach found
Charles living with his Sister Amanda Coppock True in that same census.
I have now found the True family, but have no idea where Charles ended
up.
It would be nice to be able to respond to others on this board, rather
than direct email. Sometimes the exchange of ideas in the open gives
others leads or thoughts they may not yet had.
Again, thank you very much for all your time.
Regards, Tim Coppock (10/28/00)

Note:
Most people seem to find an initial contact here and then seem to be
more comfortable to communicate directly. Should any of you wish to
keep us all informed of your progress and share what you have learned,
I will include them on this list as timely as possible.

Hi Roger,
Red Iron Lake is on State Highway 10 between Lake City and Sisseton.
Norma Johnson has provided an old map of Marshall County. You will have
to scroll down the page to see the map.
There are actually two Red Iron Lakes, North Red Iron is north of the
Highway and Sout Red Iron is south of the highway. I spent quite a lot
of time at Red Iron while growing up in Langford. We camped their with
the Boy Scouts and my Uncle had a cabin on South Red Iron.
A lot of the area around Red Iron and south to Buffalo Lake are on an
Indian Reservation which has been reclaimed to a much greater extent now
than when I lived back there. You will notice a couple of towns -
Luffman and Old Eden in this area which no longer exist. Norma Johnson's
Wagon Wheel books have quite a lot of information about this area of the
County. She lives in the current town of Eden which is a few miles west
of Old Eden.

Dear Mr. Hanson,
Just one week ago I found my biological father alive and 80 years old. I am 57. In talking to him he told me
that he lived in Amherst SD until he was fourteen (14) years old. His name is Robert Joslin and he was born
on January 23, 1920. His brother was Donald Jarrell. His Mother was Bessie Edith (Smith)Joslin, born July 4,
1885 and his father was Roy Joslin who died there in 1929(?). If you have any information on this family it
would be so greatfully appreciated.
Needless to say I was quite shocked to discover that my father is still alive. Unfortunately, his memory is
impaired from Parkinson's disease, but his sister-in-law is helping to fill in the blanks.
I am still in shock having discovered my father alive after all these years. I haven't had contact with him
since I was 2+ years old in 1945.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Jarrell

I am researching my family for a college course in family history at the

was born in Marshall county, January 14, 1914. He died January 1, 1994 at
the Britton Hospital. He was a resident of the nursing home there when he
died.
He was married to Esther Marie Slaight on St. Patricks Day 1932??. She was
one of 9 children. I don't know which church or where they were married.
There is a family story that they were married at the courthouse because she
was Irish catholic and he was Norwegian lutheran. I am interested in
locating the marriage application and record of license.
I am also wondering if there are any of my grandmothers brothers or sisters,
nieces or nephews I can find. Could you help?

Hi Lowell,
You wrote about Linville Miles having a daughter who may still be residing in
the Langford area. If you get a chance to possibly contact her and tell her
about me and my interest in genealogy, I would deeply appreciate it. I have
been able to contact a granddaughter or great-granddaughter of S. T. Miles,
Jr. via the Ancestry.com message boards. This descendent of S. T. Miles, Jr.
is also interested in family history and I was able to share with her what
info I have on S. T. (Paddy) Miles, Sr. She, in turn, provided me with some
detailed information about S. T. (Paddy) Miles, Sr.'s second wife, Matilda
Andrews Miller Harding Miles.
If the daughter of Linville Miles would be interested in corresponding, that
would be wonderful. I have so many questions about life there in SD among
the Miles. I am also wondering if she heard any legends about S. T. (Paddy)
Miles, Sr.'s 2nd wife. I haven't been able to track down what ever happened
to Matilda after Paddy's death in Nov of 1919. On his death cert, it stated
that he was married. I don't know if Matilda stayed in that area or what. I
don't know when/where she died.
Another thing (sorry to overload you with this), but I believe that one of
Matilda Miles children, Edward (wife was Stella Whitaker Harding) and his
family lived in SD for many years. I know they were there in around 1918 and
I am almost certain they were there even through sometime after 1940. Do you
recall ever knowing or knowing of an Edward or Stella Harding? (They had 2
daughters -- one in 1916 and one in 1918 -- one died following birth).
Thank you, Lowell, for the tremendous work you are doing in providing this
valuable website for genealogists. I appreciate this. In fact, because of
this website, I was able to connect with a descendent of Champ Peters and
have been able to pass on what I know of the Miles and Harding family.
(Champ married into the Harding/Miles family back in the 1890s).
Sincerely,
Sue Austin

Miller Miles. She (Matilda Miller) received 60 acres in 1901 in Marshall
County. She married Samuel T. (Paddy) Miles, Sr. in November 1903 or
November 1904. Samuel T. (Paddy) Miles died in 1919.
Matilda had previously been married to Christopher Miller (he later changed
his surname to Harding). Matilda had several children with Christopher --
Charles, Minnie Harding Bliss, Christina or Tina Harding Peters, and Edward.
Please write me for further information. I will be anxious to hear from you!!
Charles is my great-grandfather. Matilda is my great-great-grandmother.
Thanks,
Sue Austin

Subject: RE: Genealogy Info

From: Scott Adams
To: Lowell Hanson
Thank you for the reply. I have more specific information on the hardware
store that was partially owned by the Halvorsen's in 1909. It was called
"Langford Hardware Co.," and the owners are listed as Halvorsen, Hult &
Palmquist. This was taken from a 1909 business directory for Langford.
Finding relatives of Arthur Hans Halvorsen, whose father has Hans Halvorsen
(possibly Hanson), is very important to Arthur.
Here is some additional information to post, if you would:
Family name: Halvorsen (Could possibly be spelled Halvorson or Halverson on
certain records)
The Halvorsen family most likely settled in Marshall county (Second Most
Likely County: Brown).
Facts: Hans (Could also be Hanson) Halvorsen came with his family from Oslo,
Norway when he was 4 or 5 years old and settled in South Dakota with his
large family around 1874-1884. DOB: 07/14/1871. Place: Oslo, Norway. SSN:
411-20-8021. DOD: 06/30/1960 in TN.
Possible name and date of settlement for Hans' father: Andew Halvorsen
12/26/1889. We are uncertain if this is Hans' father, but these are the
records that we are looking for. Perhaps the census records would indicate
if Andrew had a son named Hans or Hanson.
Fact: This family owned the Langford Hardware Company in Langford (Marshall
County), SD for many years. I am certain that they owned it as early as
1909, but do not know how long they owned it. They were also farmers and
owned farm land through the Homestead Act.
Hans had a brother, possibly named Emil (not sure of the spelling). It would
be great to find out the members of Hans' direct family, including his
brothers' names, and his father's and mother's name.
Facts: Hans' first wife: Emma Halvorsen (Maiden Name: Kettleson). Hans &
Emma had three children in Langford, SD: Esther (born 12/30/1909 in
Langford, SD), Raymond (born 06/19/1912 in TN), and Charles Halvorsen (born
04/06/1914 in Portland, TN). They possibly adopted a daughter named Blanch
(Not sure of the spelling). As you can see Hans moved to TN sometime during
1910-1912.
1938 or 1939: Hans marries his second wife: Hazel Zenith Perry Halvorsen.
They were likely married in TN. They have two sons: Roy Harold Halvorsen
(08/23/1940 - born in TN) and Arthur Hans Halvorsen (02/10/1942 - Born in
TN)
Arthur claims to have grown up in both Aberdeen and Huron, SD, when he was
very young. We are not sure if this is true, but would like to find any
information about his father's side of the family. Supporting documentation
is very important for our purposes.
Please let me know what you find...and thank you!

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing regarding a post on the following internet site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~sdmarsha/mpion.htmll I am doing some important Genealogy research, and was hoping for a possibility to speak via telephone to one or both of the ladies featured on this page for having reached 100 years old. I am especially interested in speaking to Mrs. Gunda Holverson, as she may be related to the family that I am researching with the name: Halvorsen. The Halvorsen family lived in or around Langford, SD, and owned the Langford Hardware Co. for a number of years. They definitely owned it in 1909, and may have owned it before that, and may have owned it until the mid-1940's or later. I do not, at this point, know the first names of the parents of the family (one possibility is Andrew Halvorsen who settled in that area on 01/20/1885). They settled in the area sometime in the 1880's. One son in the family was named Hans (could have been short for Hanson), and the other might have been Emil. It was a large family and I do not have the other siblings' names. Hans later married Emma Kettleson, and they had several children and moved to TN. I would very much appreciate any help you could give me in this matter. Thank you, Scott Adams

suggestions of what I could try next, I would greatly appreciate it.
My grandfather = Louis Alphonso Sherburn, born April 18, 1885. Served in

family.
His father = william Alphonso Sherburn (Alphonso appears as Alphanso on the

His mother= Sarah White Sherburn.
I would love to know the death dates for William and Sarah, where they were

Dear Lowell,
Thanks for your reply. We had our re-union and it was wonderful to get the
family together in a place that meant so much to so many of us and yet we
had never been to the place...only heard of the history and what N. P.Langford
had to do with what was the western reaches of our land.
I can give you a thumbnail sketch of the fellow here and there is more in
the books about the discovery of Yellowstone. N. P. (also known as Tan) was
involved in the planning of the Washburn Langford expedition to survey what
was known as the Lewis and Clark discovery of the Northern territories. None
believed the tales brought back by the "mountain men" regarding the
incredible natural beauty of the area and the awesome sights that abounding
throughtout Yellowstone.
Tan was involved as a "tax collector" for the revenue service of the Federal
Gov't and a U. S. Marshall in the Dakota Territory and found some of the
tales to be somewhat credible because he couldn't believe that such incredible
stories could be completely "made up". He asked that the Feds provide a
protective militia to lead an expedition to survey this area and became one
of the leading proponents in the effort to save the land for the enjoyment of
the general public and insure that it never be developed as commercial
property for individual gain.
He was a signatory of the National Park Act under President Grant and was to
be the first secretary of the (newly formed) National Park Service. when
President Johnson had his impeachment problems and that never happened sadly
to say. Old N. P. returned to St. Paul (through your area) and became a
respected social and business leader in the Insurance business. He was also
an activist in social causes and well on in life had a disagreement with
another gentleman on the steps of City hall in St. Paul, took a swing, and
slipped on the ice and fell and died hours later.
He is still remembered as one of the "Discoverers of the Yellowstone" as a
part of the Washburn Langford expedition. He is buried in Oakland Cemetary
in St Paul close to J. J. Hill (who some suggest he collaborated with to
develop the plains area, although it has not been shown to be true).
I'd love to hear from you regarding the history of your town and who I might
contact regarding same.
Thanks for your reply,
Tom Langford

Dale,
I just read your note dated 10/15/98 Marshall Co. I go into this site every
once in a while just to see what has been posted . I think Uncle Noah
Tompkins was married in the home of P.H. Gilbert , when ever I see a name I
remember hearing about I even get excited . As a small child I lived 2 miles
south of Langford and still call it home .
I have been into genealogy for years and it is a real BAD BUG when it bites!
Did you find the cemetery for the BEKKUM you were searching ? I know the
gal who has the cemetery records . If you need it . My aunt still lives in
Langford but my best informant is my Uncle who lives near me . He was born
in Langford .

I am looking specifically for information on my grandmother Jenny Pearl
(Hayes) Hoglund but would appreciate any information on the names listed in
this email. She died in 1965 in Britton. Her father is listed as Grant
Hayes. Her mother is listed as Alice (hanon) Hayes. She (Jenny) was born in
Springfield, IL in 1890 and as a child immigrated to Marshall County. My
grandfather John Hoglund rented a farm near Langford (as that was their
address) sometime around 1915 to approximately 1931-32 when they moved to the
"hills" close-by and another farm. Family lore indicates significant hardship
on the farm during the depression.
John Hoglund had a brother Gus who farmed in Marshall County as well. They
both came from Sweden and I have significant information dating their family
back to 1673.
My father Carl G. Hoglund was born on the farm near Langford on May 5, 1916.
He went into the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 near Hill City, South
Dakota. He had three sisters (Fern, Bertha, and Marion) and one bother
(Jack).
Jenny Pearl (Hayes) Hoglund had a grandfather by the name of Joseph Hanon.
Wondering if he is the same Joseph Hanon listed as an original landowner in
Marshall County? I have no records placing him in this area at that time.

Hi Keirsten (Rodney and Julie Cargo),
Sorry, but I cannot be of too much use to you with most of your
questions.
I volunteered to administer this site because of my interest in the
area where I spent the 1st 18 years of my life. Since I live in
Virginia, I do not have direct access to much information back in
Marshall County - if it does exist.
I will post this response on the Marshall County Page and use it as a
request for anyone living in or near Marshall County who has Internet
Access to be the "Local Volunteer" and provide some of the support which
you requested. I assume you have seen the Queries Page but if not it is
at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~sdmarsha/letters.html
Your reference to the "Manor" probably refers to what was called the
Marshall Manor and is now "Wheatcrest Hills", I would guess a letter
would reach there addressed simply as - Wheatcrest Hills, Britton, SD
57430.
Webster is in Day County - there is a pointer to the Day County page on
the Marshall County 1st page. Basically all of the information which I
have is on the Marshall County pages and the Marshall County Archives.

was married to James John Freeman and lived near Four Mile Lake. They
later lived around Canova and spent time in Britton, SD. An article in
the Marshall County History Book states that sons, Harry and Fred
Freeman were farmers and lived in Britton, SD. Mrs. Etta Freeman died
in a prairie fire in April of 1908. They also had daughters Ruby
(married a Roberts), Pearl married (Locke) Etta married (Hamilton)
Grace married (Davis)
Other Facts known, but at this time have no specific dates with me.
Warnie Cargo and Ethel Philbrook were married in Webster, SD

Hi Marlys,
If my memory is correct, we probably met as children. As I remember,
your dad had a farm in the Veblen area, or was that another cousin. As I
was growing up we thought going to Roy or 4-Mile Lake was a long trip,
so we did not make it all the way to Veblen very often.
My mother was Katherine Hoines - Ole's brother and my Dad was Hans
Hanson. My Dad was born in Norway and came over for a 3 month stay in
about 1920. In 1969, after my mother died, he decided to return to
Norway and is buried in the Kopervik cemetery along with his parents. I
was in Norway for the first time in June of 1956 and unfortunately my
Grandmother died in March or April of that year at the age of around 95.
I had one visit with some Hoines cousins on that trip, but at 20 I did
not think about keeping track of what was going on.
On subsequent trips to Norway, we spent most of our time with the
Kopervik relatives - my Dad's brother Lars had spent a few years in the
US and spoke English better than the Hoines relatives. As I was growing
up in Langford the opposite was true, we spent most of our time with the
Hoines relatives.
In the last couple of years, I have been getting to know some of the
younger Hanson relatives via the Internet, but have found no Hoines
relatives on the Net.
Are you still living in Marshall County? The Marshall SDGEN pages are
quite Langford Centric, so I have been trying to find some people from
other parts of the county to help people find information in those
areas.

Hi Cindy,
I knew your great grandmother's brother Alfred. He and his wife Marie
lived on the next block while I was in High School. Your Great
Grandmother's Mother, Eliassina Sandhaaland had a sister Johanna Marie
Sandhaaland who is my Great Grandmother - so we are some kind of
cousins. Sherman Wickre of Livermore, Iowa produced a genealogy tracing
our ancestry back to 1625 on the Island of Karmoy in Norway.
My father was also born, raised, and spent his last year on the same
Island, so my ancestry on both sides of the family goes back to Karmoy.
Unfortunately I was not interested enough in Genealogy earlier in life
to maintain any kind of records while visiting on Karmoy.
We have Sherman Wikre's account and also some history recorded in the
Langford Centennial book. One of my goals is to included some of the
Langford area Pioneer history on the Marshal County Web Page, but so far
I have only transcribed my 3rd grade teacher's history.
I have corresponded with a couple of other people in the Sandhaaland
tree and will look up their Email addresses and get them to you later.
Now I need to get back to work.
Thanks!

Hi, Lowell
I did some checking on what I have in my files. From what I have, the
closest relationship between you and me would be 4th cousins, with a
common ancestor of Marta Hansdtr. Sandhåland (cir 1767-1853), who is
my ancestor a couple of ways. We are also 5th cousins with closest
common ancesters being Marta's parents, Hans Sjursen and Katrine
Håkonsdtr Vikra.
I have my database in Brother's Keeper for Windows, and I'm running
Windows 98 on my computer and have WordPerfect 8 for a word processor.
I can export and import GEDCOM files.
I'm enclosing an .rtf file with the first few generations of what I
have of your ancestors, mostly ancestors of your maternal grandfather
Elias Olsen Høynes. Much of it is from the bygdeboker, some from our
relatives LaVonne (Fagerland) and husband Gene Larson who have a dairy
farm at Langford, and her sister Melinda Nelson in Minneapolis, whose
address you have on your Genweb pages. LaVonne and Melinda sent me a

Researching family name - LUFFMAN - when I discovered in a 1909 SD city
directory, a postoffice (very small town of about 20) near Sisseton
named Luffman. Its not a common name and almost all in the US are
linked. Do you have any information on the town? For whom it was
named? Does any of it remain? Thanks for any information you can
provide.

Bonnie,
Luffman, in Marshall County, SD., was named after its first postmaster
Marin M. Luffman, who was appointed postmaster in 1900. In 1904 someone
else was named postmaster. He is buried in the Lake City Cemetery.
That information is from the Marshall County History book published in
1979 by the Marshall County Historical Society.
Hope this helps.

Hans Olson BEKKUM, also known as Hans Olson lived in Langford,
Marshall county in 1900. He lived with his daughter and son in law, Mari
and Peter H. Gilbert and is listed in the 1900 census. He died on November
21, 1907. I am trying to find the location of his grave. I believe he may
be buried in Langford.
I have not been able to get a copy of the 1905 state census to see if
he was still living in Langford at that time.
I would appreciate any information about my great grandfather or the
Bekkum family.
Thanks very much---Dale Decker

You have a beautiful Courthouse! I am trying to find out the charges for a
census record search on the 1860 census. I didn't see it listed, so it is
even available for Marshall County?
If you do know it is available, could you point me in the right direction?
Thank You very much!!!

Subject: South Dakota death index.

Hello Lowell Hanson!
Is there a death index for South Dakota? If so, would you do a look-up
for me regarding Alice Eaton who lived in Marshall county during the late
1800s; she probably died between 1885 and 1910. Would you also check on
Nettie Chase who was living in Marshall county in 1945?
I am trying to learn deathdates and locations for Alice Eaton and Nettie
Chase. I tried visiting Marshall county cemeteries on your homepage,
but it would not load on my computer; I'll try again in a few days.
