SMITH GORDON STONE
Looking for information regarding the SMITH family of Britton. My
grandmother, ANNA SMITH born approx. 1893 was born in Britton. On her
first marriage certificate, it names her parents as Frank Smith and
mother Bessie(Gordon) Smith. On a later marriage certificate, it is
stated that her father is FRANK SMITH and her mothers as MATILDA STONE.
I know that ANNA had a sister by the name of HANNA...any information
about anyone named here, would be most appreciated.

Hi. Looking for Regina LIEN and family. She was daughter of Thor and Ingeborg
LIEN of Marshall County. They supposedly lived near KIDDER, SD.
Around 1907, (date is guessed through census data), Regina LIEN married a
Henry Edward SCHUSTER. They had 3 children, one of them, my grandmother, born
in HILLHEAD, SD in 1909.
I have written the state archives, and they have found no Henry SCHUSTER in
their census. In 1905, Regina was living with her parents, single. In 1915, she
was in Roberts Co., SD, a widow, with three children.
ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a brick wall here, and
can't get there from MICHIGAN.
Thanks for everything.

Dear Lowell,
I am looking for information on the family of James FOLEY who lived in
Britton, Marshall County, SD from the late 1880s until about 1927. He was
born in Winchendon, MA in 1861, son of Michael and Johanna (Sullivan) Foley.
He married about 1909 in SD to Gertrude O. (unknown last name). Census
information indicates that Gertrude was born in either Wisconsin or
Minnesota, and both her parents were born in Sweden. Gertrude was over
twenty years younger than her husband and her estimated date of birth is
early 1880s. The census information shows two children: Hazel, born about
1910, and John, born about 1912. According to the census information, James
FOLEY's occupations were: 1900, manager of farm; 1910, chief of police; 1920,
police, city of Britton. About 1927, the family moved to Aberdeen where
James was a hotel manager until his death in 1929. James' death certificate
shows the burial was in Britton, but no cemetery name is given. Any
information on this family is appreciated.
Thank you for your help.

Dear Lowell,
First, let me take this opportunity to thank you for the fine
job you are doing with the Marshall County pages. I was born in
Veblen (the town) and was raised in the Claire City and Veblen
area, so I find all information of interest.
I wonder if you would consider adding a link to SlektsforumKarmoy.
Many of the Norwegians who settled in Marshall, Day, and Roberts
Counties came from Karmoy, Norway and I think this site would be of
great interest.
Also, I have a copy of the records from Palestine Evangelical
Lutheran Church, which is located in Veblen Township, and would be
willing to do look-ups from that record as time permits.

Thanks again--

Note from Lowell:
Thanks Bud, I have used this site to get information on my ancestors
who all came from Karmoy. My mother's family was from Hoines on the Ocean
(West) Side of the Island, and my father was born, grew up, and was buried
in Midstokke near Kopervik. His family name was Bratta before he came to South
Dakota. My father's sister's great-grandaughter visited us for a week
last month and we keep in touch with quite a few of the family members.
One of my cousins and her Husband are going to lead a tour to visit
Norwegian churches in the Dakotas and Minnesota this fall.

Interested in finding any information about a woman, Loydie C. Sevy, who is
listed in the 1900 census as the wife of my grandfather, John Owen Davies.
At the time of this listing, there were two children in the family;
William Sevy born 1896 and Allen Sevy born 1898.
My grandfather left Marshall County between 1900 and 1903. At the latter date,
he was in the process of taking out a homestead in Okanogan County, Washington.
We have no clues as to what happened to this wife, or her children (apparently
from a previous marriage).

Lowell,
I have a copy on CD of the Marshall County 1900 census. If people want to give me a town
I can do look-ups. I prefer it if they have the ED# and maybe a page, but the towns are
small, so it isn't a big issue. I may be able to send a copy (JPG via Email), or I can
just give them the info. I was able to find my family - but not where I thought they
were. They were recorded as living in Veblen. I found them in Nordland - and only after
reading almost every page in the county (except 5).

Subject: Ole Mikal Olsen Snorteland
Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 21:28:30 -0800
From: Bernard Onerheim
To: Lowell
I am Bernard Onerheim, grandson of Ole Mikal Snorteland a pioneer in the
Day/Marshall Counties of South Dakota. I am an amateur genealogist and
have traced Ole Mikal Snorteland's ancestors to Bjorn Medhaug (about
1600) and Hans Helgeson (about 1600) through the use of the bygdebok
from Karmoy. I enjoyed your article on the internet concerning "The
Great Emigration From Karmoy in the 80's. I would also like to
congratulate you on the accuracy of this article. When I got to "The
Veblen Settlement, I found my grandfather's name listed as Mikal [Ole
Mikal Olsen?, 1885 age 33]. That is absolutely correct but I would like
to explain more about him.
Ole Mikal Snorteland was born 11 June 1852 in Skudenes, Karmoy, Norway
and died 25 Apr 1925 and is buried in the Falnes Lutheran Church
Cemetery, Day County, Iowa. His father was Ole Mikal Olsen Snorteland
born Apr 1826 in Karmoy and died 1896 and is buried in the Falnes
Cemetery, Skudeneshavn, Norway. The next generation is Ole Olsen
Snorteland born 24 Feb 1797 in Karmoy and died 1849 and is buried in the
Falnes Cemetery, Skudeneshavn, Norway. The next generation is Ole
Hansen Snorteland born 1757 in Karmoy and died 1811 and is buried in
the Falnes Cemetery, Skudeneshavn, Norway. So you see there are four
generations of Ole Snortelands. At the time time the people had names
for them such as old Ole and young Ole ets. The following is the family
of Ole Mikal Olsen Snorteland born Apr 1826 and died 1896. Married
Gjertru Serine Jakobsdatter Naset born 1824 on Karmoy and died 1899.
Their Children are:
1. Ole Mikal Olsen Snorteland (Pioneer to South Dakota) born 11 June
1852 at Karmoy and died 25 Apr 1925 buried in Falnes Cemetery, Day
County, SD. Married Karine Magrethe Snorteland born 27 May 1853 at
Karmoy and died 1 Aug 1945 and is buried in Falnes Cemetery, Day County,
SD.
2. Kristian Olsen Snorteland born about 1854 at Karmoy. He never
married and I do not have a record of his death.
3. Jakob Ingvald Olsen Snorteland (Pioneer to South Dakota) born 1858.
He was listed in The Veblen Settlement as an immigrant 1885. He moved
from South Dakota to Ferndale, Washington about 1908 and I do not have
his death date. He married Louise Bergithe Larsdatter Sorstokke born
1860 at Karmoy. Jakob and Louise are first cousins. They had one son
Ole Mandius born on Karmoy, Norway. The following children were born in
South Dakota: Betsy Zera 1887, Clara 1889, Johan Laurence 1894, Oskar
(Oscar) 1896. The following was recorded in the Ferndale Record,
Ferndale, Washington on Wednesday 7 Apr 1965 page 6. Former residen
passes March 24. A former Ferndale residen, Mrs. Lilly Snorteland Clark
passed away in Port Angeles hospital on March 24. Mrs. Clark came to
Ferndale about 1908 with her parents and family. Her father and brother
Mandus bought the Allen Baker Hardware Store and operated it for many
years. Another brother Oscar Snortland was with the Ferndale Pharmacy
until his retirement. Lilly was married to George Clark on August 24,
1933. They lived in the Clallam Bay-Sekju area until 1963 when they
moved to Port Angeles. The survivors are her husband George and several
nieces and nephews. funeral services were held in Port Angeles March
27.
4. Sina Olsdatter Snorteland born about 1860 in Karmoy and married Oluf
Hansen Snorteland born about 1860. I do not have a record of her ever
leaving Norway.
5. Laurentse Olsdatter Snorteland (Pioneer to South Dakota) was born
1864 at Karmoy. Married Johan Josefsen (Sorstokke) Snorteland born 1857
at Karmoy. Johan and Laurentse are first cousins. Johan Josefsen
Snorteland's mother (Bertha) was an older sister of Laurentse
Snorteland's father (Ole). (Ole) is the Compiler's (Bernard Onerheim)
Great Great Grandfather. Johan Snorteland Laurentse Snorteland
immigrated to U.S.A. and lived at Langford, South Dakota. They had 6
children: 1. Lars 1890 married Valjer; 2. Jenny Serine 1892 married
Knute Lickness; 3. Charlie 1895; 4. Bertha 1897 married Ole Lickness; 6.
Clara Oline 1902 married Harry Marland. Upon the death of Johan
Josefsen, Laurentse married Olaus P. Vik born 1855 at Karmoy, Norway.
They had one daughter Agnes Vik 1909 married Earnest Rye. Laurentse was
also known as: Lavensa or Lavrense.
Note from Lowell:
Bernard, Thanks for all of the information about the Snortelands. Just one
correction in the listing in the paragraph above. The 4th child Bertha was
my Aunt. She married my mother's brother, Ole Hoines - not Lickness. The 6th
child Clara's son - Bill Nerland - was my High School classmate.
Thanks Again! Lowell

Iowa... My grandparents came to California in June 1913 and my father was born
in October 1913. I'm sure that the name Hanson in Norway is like the name
Smith in England.. My youngest son went to his best friends wedding in Norway
last year in Stavanger and visited the island of Bomlo...
Second- For you I have two (2) Scrapbook / Photo Albums that belonged to John
F. and Arlene Page. I collect "Stuff" plus I am always looking for old
military photos/items that I sometimes find in these old albums. At a local
flea market a lady vendor was unpacking her stuff to sell and she pulled out of
a box these two albums. They belong to the Page family and if there are no
longer any members of the family you may give them to your Historical
Society. There are some interesting photos from the teens and 20's that I'm
sure someone will enjoy... plus there is a portrait wedding picture of Harry
and Susan Page- 1910.
Thank you for your time and please let me know where you would like them to be
sent...
Thank you, ...HM

I would be interested in scanned material and would gladly put some on this site!
Thanks! Lowell

In the meantime I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Debbie Huewe humble12000@yahoo.com p.s. How would I go about verifying that my grandmother had a post office in her home? What records would I look at? Thanks!
