I am searching for William Richard Castle who lived in Langford,
or Britton, with wife Lina around 1880, they had 11 children. I cannot
find any info on his death..where or how..I only can get date which
was Aug. 3, 1930. I think he may have been in jail at one time but
I don't know where or why....Help? (Ultimately I want to trace family
from abroad.)

His father and mother were Joseph and Anna Castle, but I don't know
if they lived in SD, because William was born in Ontario. Don't know
when he came to SD or when. I am a granddaughter of William, my dad
is James W. Castle.

Thank you for any guidance on my "mystery tour"! Pat C.

Do you have death records for Marshall County? My husband's
grandfather, Walter Baker, is buried in the Britton Cemetery.
I am not sure when he died but I think it was in the last 20 years.
His wife, Inez Baker is also buried there and her grave marker has a
date on it. They lived in the Newark, SD area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

I have a little dilemma about Britton, South Dak. I have a picture of
my ancestor that is hand-written on the back "Catherine Timmerman".
This picture was taken in Britton, South Dak and has a photographer's
emblem on the front of the picture that says S.A. Crockard, Artist, Britton, S.D.

The problem is that Catherine Timmerman died in Clayton County, New York
in 1881 and someone has recently told me that Britton did not become a town until
1882. So obviously there is a problem here. Is it possible that the town's name
was Britton before 1882 and it did not FORMALLY become a town until 1882? Any
other ideas you might have on this would be truly appreciated. I am just stymied
as to how this can be Catherine Timmerman Cook and taken in Britton before 1881.
Catherine's son was George Hudson, who I know lived in Britton during this time
period, so we thought perhaps she was visiting him and had the portrait done.

ANY HELP would be sincerely appreciated.

Best regards, Kathy

Seeking info on Thomas Henry MOORE born 1883 in KY listed Britton, SD in
Marshall County on a marriage license here in Vermilion County,IL on 25 June 1915.

HE listed J.T. MOORE as father and Mary GOODMAN as mother, they may or may not
have been in SD. Any leads would be greatly appreciated as I have not been able
to find him. He was divorced here sometime between 25 June 1915 and 1920 so may

I'm looking for information about Annie Jensen Eidahl, who I believe
was living in Langford, South Dakota at one time after 1911. Her husband,
John Gunderson Eidahl, died in December, 1911, in South Dakota (possibly in Langford).

They had a large family, and probably moved to South Dakota from Lisbon Township,
Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, sometime shortly after 1900.

Is there a Langford or a Marshall County Historical Society or Genealogical
Society who might have a cemetery register for the county?

Thanks.

I am trying to look up my great grandfather's name on the 1870 Federal Census.
He was a soldier at that time at Ft. Sisseton (Fort Wadsworth). Would you
possibly know which enumeration district in the Dakota Territory would
include this fort? I know his name appeared with other members of the fort.
His name was Private Charles William Cole, birthplace, Rhode Island.
The county names have changed since 1870, and I have no idea what pages to
search. It is now Marshall Co.

These seem to be my choices.

Please choose a county: • Bon Homme • Clay • Union • Brookings • Duet •
Yankton • Buffalo • Lincoln • Pembina • Charles Mix

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Woman on the porch is Mabel Erbe Brooberg
Taller boy, Russell Erbe Brooberg, DOB 1916
Smaller boy, Royal Gustav Brooberg, DOB 1917
Man in the rig, Sven Gustav Brooberg

This family lives in Minnesota for the 1920 census, but the house is not
from that area. The house does seem to match bits and pieces of a house that
appear in various photos that we know are from SD.

I don't know who the standing man is.
I don't know who the girl on the porch is.

Mabel did like having female relatives come to visit. Or is the girl crying
because daddy is outside the fence and she isn't?

Have recently heard a story that Sven was involved in the training of horses
and assisted a man named Julin. Julin may be a relative or in Iowa or
Aberdeen area.

I appreciate you posting Mabel's picture, she disposed of most of her
pictures so this one appears to have meant a lot to her.

I am looking for information on anyone who owned a ranch or farm in Stena
Township between 1910 and 1915. I have been looking for a place called
the Setbacken Ranch, but apparently there was no place officially
recognized by that name in Marshall County during that time. My great
grandparents' names were Alfred and Emma (or Loantha) Nelson and 3 of
their children were born in S. Dakota. Vivian was born in Stena on July
9, 1910 and her birth record states that Alfred and Emma were living in
Stena. I also looked up a marriage record for Alfred's half sister,
Ellen Johnson, who married Grant Chittenden on Feb 16, 1911. One of the
witnesses was someone named Mable Russell. The other witness was
Alfred's sister Amanda. So I'm wondering if Mable Russell also lived on,
owned, or was the wife of the one who owned this "Setbacken Ranch". Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm looking for dates in my research of the Donaldson and
Sturdivant families, of Newark, SD..

Peter, William and Elmer James Donaldson came from New York and
Wisconsin about 1884, or before! Robert McCamet Sturdivant came
around 1904 from Va. He married Pearl Fannie Donaldson, daughter of
Elmer James and Minnie Donaldson.

These are my Grandparents and Great Grands, an am seeking birth,
marriage and death dates for them, and their families! I think
Robert "Camet" and Pearl were married about 1905. That's all I have.

Pearl was a school teacher in Newark, teaching in a 1 room school
house near the SD/ND border. Most of her students were her own
children, and some of them came from ND across the boarder to go to
school!

Children of "Camet" and Pearl Sturdivant were: Camet (ak Buster),
Bessie, Gladys(ak.Doll), Everett (my Dad), Mildred, Doris, Mattie,
Elmer, Lynn and Elwood. (Elwood may have been born in Wash. State)

Would like any dates listed above, pertaining to the aforementioned
two families! Thank You! Elaine gilcrestcollies@msn.com

I am emailing you to see if you have ever heard of a place called the
Setbacken Ranch in Marshall county. In the mid 1910s my great
grandparents, Alfred Nelson and Emma Loantha (Knight) Nelson and their
children were travelling from Michigan to the Seattle, Washington area to
seek medical help for Emma who had contracted TB. They stayed in S.
Dakota for awhile at the Setbacken Ranch. According to the limited
information I have, this occurred either in 1915 or 1917. I'm wondering
if this was the real name of the place they stayed at or a nickname.
Maybe it was a sanitarium or hospital? Thank you very much for your

Lowell,
Attached is the file on Nidaros cemetery. Please note that the cemetery
is in Roberts County, very near the Roberts/Marshall county line.

Nidaros was organized in 1896 and merged with Our Saviors Lutheran Church
in Veblen, South Dakota in 1965. It is located in the S/W 1/4 of section
6, Norway township, Roberts County. I did the survey in August, 2001 so it
should be current to that date. Also please note that this is not the
official record of burials in this cemetery. The records are probably held
by Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Veblen.

This is a good example of how readers of this list can also be participants. Bud obviously put a lot of time in collecting this information and we thank him! Should any of you like to do a similiar project we would be happy to add it to the list. The data would preferably be in a spread sheet format, but could be sent in most any manner including plain paper lists.

Thanks! Lowell

Hi,

I am searching for any information on John James Kelley ( or Kelly) (my
grandfather), born on Aug 11, 1901 in Veblen, SD. He died in Anacortes, Wa
in 1956. He was married to Ruth Ivis Kelley. They had one son David.

His parents were Edward Kelley (or Kelly) and Sarah Stewart. I need info
on them (ancestors, dates of death and birth, etc) as well.

The info I have says that there were also siblings, Margaret, Rosella, Violet
Sarah, Leonard, Eddy, Albert, Lee and LLoyd. Some lived in Oregon I believe.

Any records for him or his parents?

Thank you very much! Patty Kelley Vance

Hi. I don't know if you can help me or not but i'm going to try. I was born
in Roberts county, we lived accross the road from the county line. The church
we went to was in Marshall county, it was the Lutheran church east of Pickeral
Lake. The church wasn't being used anymore some time in the 70's. Do you have
any idea who I would talk to about the old church records?

It was a Zion Lutheran church.

Hello Mr. Hanson. I am emailing you back for the 3rd time today. This is a huge
thank you! I have connected with a relative because of your site. I am so bowled
over and plain excited I don't know what to do with myself. I am feeling very
frustrated tho at the moment as I am wide awake and my new found relative with
alot of info that I am looking for is no doubt sleeping! Sheesh. Thank you so much.
I just can't say it enough or loud enough. I also figured out the land records due to
your query section and think I know also know the history of a piece of land that my
great great uncle lived on. Maybe that is just one great but a relative at any rate.

I didn't realize at first that the land tract records that were so graciously
transcribed were the culmination of the records for that area at first.
Reading the queries straightened me up on that. Your dedication to this site is incredible
and you deserve recognition for this.
Sincerely,

Hello . I am looking for my grandfather's uncle, THEODORE OSNESS. He died in
July of 1974 in Langford. I have no idea at this point if he farmed in Langford
or not or whether he was married or not. I have been told that he never did marry.
At this point my only information about him is that he was born near Cottonwood,MT Jan 9,1886
and he died in Langford. His SSN # was issued before 1951 in CA. As Langford appears to
be a small community I thought it might be possible to find out about Theodore Osness.
Where he lived, neighbors, what he did for a living etc. Any help that you could give me

Lowell,
In perusing the excellent material you have put on-line, I made a discovery
and perceived a problem. First, I see that you live in Centreville, Va. My
late father who was born in a sod hut on a homestead in Marshall County in 1901
for several years lived in Centreville in what is now the Ellanor Lawrence Park!

In perusing the almost unreadable 1900 county map, I see that the section numbering
in the Easternmost town- ships seems skewed by 2 miles. Therefore it is uncertain
where my forebears were. This is specisally evident in Veblen and Labelle townships.

Is it possible to obtain maps of these two similar to the one you gave of Hickman?
Please advise. Both my grandfather (John Henry Anderson), his father-in-law (Hans Thompson),
and possibly a great- great aunt (Hannah Thompson) had homesteads.in Township 128N,
Range 54W, which appears to be Veblen. The Thompsons came from Norway in about 1884,
and I am attempting to trace them back there. Any help is obviously much appreciated,
and I thank you in advance.

We are researching the jacob LARSON family that settled in the Marshall
County area in approximately 1874. Jacob and family came from Norway. His
wife and two sons that we know of came with Jacob. My grandfather, bernt
LARSON, who at the time was about 6 or 7 years old and his brother, larius
LARSON was about 3years old. We have a picture of a sister, martha LARSON
who married a lars WICKRE. There were other children, we believe.
We found on the Land Tract Records, where Jacob, Bernt and Larius had
property. Jacob's was listed as Sisseston, Bernt and Larius was listed as
Veblen.
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
The dates listed above are the only dates that we have found.
