Subject:Marshall County Query
   From:Kathleen Anderson Brunelle
   Date:April 6, 2005
     To:Lowell Hanson

Dear Lowell,
Thank you so much for volunteering to help other people with their
genealogy! My father's family is from Marshall County, South Dakota.
My grandfather, Lewis B. Anderson, moved to MA later in life, where my
father was born. He died young, and we have known nothing about his
family until now. I am very interested in getting in touch with all of
the family we have (though I believe they are no longer living in South
Dakota). Here is the information I have -- if you can fill anything in
I'd be so grateful. Thank you.

Ben Anderson (emigrated from Norway in 1900 - born about 1880) marries
Dorthea Larson (daughter of Ole Larson and Karen Barboe) in Marshall County
- born about 1911 (April 22).

If I could find Clarence's exact birth date or Alma's, I might be able to trace
the family forward so I could find some living relatives. My father has never
met any of his father's family, and we would be so grateful to know anything.

My grandfather, his brother and sister were born in Marshall County. I am
looking for birth records for his brother and sister. Unfortunately, I cannot
look them up on-line since the database goes only through 1905; in addition,
your site states that I can only send away for births after 1915.

Clarence G. Anderson was born in 1909 in Marshall County and his sister Alma M. Anderson
was born in 1910. Could you please advise me as to how I can find these records?

Thank you so much.

I found your e-mail address on the SD webpage, maybe you could help me.
I have just started my research in SD, where would I go to find birth
certificates,

My grandmother, Arletta Smith was born (1886) in Kidder, SD along with
the rest of her siblings.

Looking for infomation on the ALBERT and CAROLINE SMITH family, lived in
Kidder, SD from 1881 - 1914, they had 8 children all born in Kidder, 2 died
in Kidder. Where would I look to find birth and death records?

Thanks in advance and have a good day

Charles August BERG (Carl August Berg) b. 14 Oct 1854, Hemmesjö, Kronoberg,
Sweden to Carl Johan BERG and Anna Lena STRÖMGREN. Emigrated from Sweden in
July 1880. I found land purchases for a Charles A. Berg in Brown County,
South Dakota in 1887, Newport, Marshall County, South Dakota in 1890, and again
in Marshall County in 1910. I think these purchases are by this man, as his
brother, Fabian, also purchased land at the same time and in the same places
in 1887 and 1890.

Any information on this man, his family, etc., would be most welcome.
I have had a hard time finding him in census records, etc.

Hello, I would like to talk with anyone who can check some records for me,
if they exist. This is regarding: Amanda Ross, William Hugh Ross, Cora Ross,
Edwin Ross, Ira Ross and Elisabeth Karn. They homesteaded in the Stena Township,
Marshall County. William died of Typhoid fever, I think, about 1887.

Amanda continued to live on the homestead and turned it from a tree claim to a farm.
I believe they had 160 acres. There is a family story that she ran the area post office
from her home. In fact it is noted in some papers I have from the NARA that she did.

But if there is any note or record of it I would like a copy. I’d be interested in
almost any record that mentions any of these people. My grandmother said that he,
William Ross, was the first person to build a frame house on the Dakota prairie, she
thought this might’ve been recorded somewhere. I’d appreciate any information I can get.

Thank you,

Lowell,

My cousin, Kay, and I are trying to track down some of our family history which
gets, like many, a bit convoluted.

What we do know (or think we know) at this point is that Albert Hanson and Olga Skjonsberg
married in 1922 and had three children, Linnie 1927?, Darline Lola 1932? and Jane 1936.
When Olga died (somewhere around 1940-42??) Darline & Jane went to live with Rev. Finlay and
Alice MacMartin (Presbyterian minister) and Linnie went to an Uncle and Aunt. The 1930
census has Albert and Olga living in Buffalo township, Marshall County so I assume Linnie,
Darline and Jane were born in that area.

Would you by any remote chance be able to direct me to either anyone who might have known
Albert and Olga or to any vital records source in Marshall County. I really appreciate
the help and advise even if it is only to tell me what Presbyterian churches are in the area
or the contact numbers for the vital statistics info.

thanks

To: Mr. Lowell Hanson

1. Looking for information on a Thomas W. COWELL, with wife Sarah Jane Roach COWELL
and 5 children ages 2 through 10. Thomas W. COWELL was granted homestead patent on
June 1, 1891 for 160 acres. Located in "South East quarter of section 32, Township 128
North of Range 59 West of the 5th Principal Meridian in Dakota Territory". Patent
states "Thomas W. COWELL of Marshall Co".

Family records indicate that this Cowell family abandoned the homestead after receiving
the patent. These records indicate the cause of leaving was drought and grasshopper
plague. Family had come from Dakota Co. in MN and returned to Dakota Co. in MN.

My specific questions are as follows:

a. Confirmation of drought and grasshoppers as possible cause of leaving?
b. Chain of ownership of the above described quarter section?
c. Brief comments type of land and crops grown?

2. I have also found a patent granted to a John A. COWELL in Marshall Co. Land
description of patent granted 11 June 1887 is 05 127 N 059 W 023 160 acres. Questions on
this individual as follows:

a. Any records of a family with John A Cowell?
b. How far apart are the two quarter sections?
c. Chain of ownership of this quarter section?

I am a grandson of this Thomas W. COWELL, thus would appreciate any information.
The family genealogy efforts to date have not produced any information on John A. COWELL, therefore we are interested in finding if he is a relative to Thomas W. COWELL.

Thank you,

Hello,

I am seeking information on my sons' paternal great grandparents for a family
history book I am putting together for them for Christmas:

Carl Hanson, born 1862 in Denmark (where in Denmark??) Carl Hanson died in
1928 and I believe is buried in Britton Cemetery.

He had a brother, Lewis Hanson, who was born in 1857, also in Denmark. Lewis
and wife, Cecelia, had a fairly large family and I am hoping someone from that
family could give me information on the parents, siblings, etc. of Carl and Lewis -
and where in Denmark they were born, and where they lived at time of immigration.
Would also much appreciate a picture of Carl.

Carl Hanson was married to Josephine Rasmussen, who was born 1883 in Denmark
Carl and Josephine were my sons' great-grandparents. After Carl died in April 1928,
Josephine married Sievert Askland 23 May 1936 in Brown County, but he was a resident
of Marshall County and she was a resident of Day County. Would anyone have a picture
of Sievert? I don't know when he died, but in November 1946 Josephine married a
James Brown.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Hi Tina,

Is there any chance that you or someone you know could take a photo / transcription
of my grandmother's gravestone for me for my records? If you have access to a digital
camera that would be best, but any would do.

Her name was ELLA (POTTER) DAVIS, d. June 23, 1913. She is buried in Britton
Cemetery, Lot 17 (Old Cemetery), Grave # 4. The folks at the Britton Cemetery
were able to provide me with this information. Since my grandfather left
Britton shortly after her death, there should be no other Davis nearby. For
some time after there arrival in Britton (City) around 1907, they evidently
ran a hotel on Main St.

Let me know if you can help.

Thank you.

I was doing a search of Britton, SD yesterday and came upon your site.
I am a niece of Stephen Schwartz of Britton and have some names for
the Gabouy's.Don't know if this will help them, but we can but try.

My father was Frank Schwartz, one of Stephen's brothers who divided their
time between the St. Walburg area and Britton. I can't recall, but I might
have met him on a visit to Britton when I was a young teen. I met so
many relatives and I'm afraid my mom and dad were not that good about keeping
in touch with family.

The Gabouy's might try a search for Lorraine (Hondl) Houle, who is the daughter
of Regina, a sister to Stephen. She lives in Edmonton, Alberta. Also there is
Maxine and Bill Barth who live in Wilkie, Sask. They have two daughters, Michelle
and Nicole. I am sorry, but do not know if the daughters have married.

THere is also an L. Swan of Melfort, Sask. This info is coming from an archive
written by Regina and Lorraine and given to me by my maternal uncle Albert

My late father grew up in Britton, SD in the 20's and 30's. He had several
newspaper clippings of long distances races he won when he was at Britton High.

Those clippings were lost in the Cedar fire that destroyed much of Southern
California last October. Do you know which newspaper I might contact to get
copies of the various articles that refer to him?

My ancestors, family name of Spain, moved from Wisconsin to Lyman County, SD,
in the late 1800’s…

I notice that there is a town in Marshall County named Spain, on the 1920
road map of SD…

The town of Spain is not mentioned in your listing of old towns of
Marshall County ?

It occurred to me, that some of my ancestors may have got tired on their
way south and stopped off in Marshall County and

Started their own town ?

Any thoughts on this subject ???

I am looking for information on a man named lloyd BAKER. I do not know
when he was born or died, nor where. He may have been born in Minnesota.

He married a marrion e. DEMPSTER. circa 1930 and probably in Britton where
the two lived. They had a daughter named marrion l. BAKER in february of
1930 in Britton. They may have had a stillborn daughter either before or

I was wondering if you could help me?

A man named Stephen Schwartz lived and worked in the St. Walburg, Saskatchewan,
Canada area in the 1930 and 1940's until he was called back to the US to serve
in WW2. He survived WW2 and came back to Canada for a visit in the 1970's before
his death in June 11, 1974. He is buried in Britton, SD.

He was related to D.L.Atkinson of Britton,SD, died January 23, 1959, who is also
buried in Britton, SD. After Stephen's death a nephew of his contacted my uncle
in St Walburg, Saskatchewan and lent him a diary that Stephen had kept while he
had worked on my Grandmother Rose Forbes farm.

My uncle read the diary and then returned it to the nephew. Unfortunately he can't
remember the name of the nephew.

I was wondering if there is a way to access an obituary for either Stephen Schwartz
or D.L. Atkinson through the local newspaper archive or by contacting any local
funeral homes who would have done the burial arrangements for either of these men.
An obituary or the person who made arrangements for the burial of Stephen Schwartz
might be able to help me further.

I am hoping to find some names of next of kin for either of these men so I may contact
them to see if the diary still exists and to see if they would be so kind as to share
the diary again. This diary would give a good insight to a part of my grandmothers' life.

I am from Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan and although I have other funeral homes helpful
with details like this I don't know what the protocol is for act of privacy in South Dakota.

Is there a local historical society for Britton SD or Marshall Coubty SD?

Are you able to advise me as how to continue this search or are you able to help
me in any way. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Sincerely,

Ellen

Hi Lowell,

I have Schukar ancestors, and my mother remembers that her grandfather
Carl Schukar had a relative (brother? cousin?) who died in Dakota, and
that great-grandpa traveled from south central Nebraska to Dakota for the
funeral -- no date known, but probably between 1920 and 1930.

I've researched the Schukar family extensively, and didn't know of any of
them who had gone to SD. But tonight searched through on-line census
records Marshall County, I found a Herman SCHUCKER, born Germany Nov
1872, immigrated 1886 (+ or - a year or two, depending on the year of the
census.). He apparently never married, as he is on census records of
1900 and 1910 as a hired hand, farm laborer, and in 1920 as a manager of
a farm, and this time with a hired man. I couldn't find him in 1930.

He was in Pleasant Valley Twp in 1900, but in "unorganized" in 1910 and
1920.

This Herman SCHUCKER seems like he could be this relative. If I could
find the name of his place of birth in Germany, I could probably confirm
or disprove the relationship. My mom is 94 years young, and this would
be a neat "gift" for her if I could tie him into our family.

Are there township maps available that would show where "unorganized"
was? What cemeteries might have been near-by? Would the court house have
death records for 1920-1930? Would they do a search if I can only give
them a decade for a time period? Any suggestions about whom I might
contact for further direction?

Thanks, Lowell!

Hello Lowell,

First let me say that I found the Marhall Co. site very useful and interesting.

I'm looking for any information I can find on my Grandfather and his first wife when
they lived in Marshall County during the period of 1907 and 1910.

I found in the 1910 census that he; Francis S. Davis b.1877 , his wife, Ella Davis, b. 1877, and
their son, Gordon F. Davis, age 13 lived in Britton City, Marshall Co., SD. I was going to
provide you with a copy till I saw that it was 7.5 mgs. :-) If I'm reading it correctly, it's
enumeration district 304, sheet 3a.....not sure on that because the copy is unclear..

Francis, his wife and son, had moved from Indian Lake, Warren Co., New York....sometime
between 1900 and 1907. He last showed up in NY on the 1900 census.

I did find on this website where his name is listed under the Federal Land Records for Marshal County.
He purchased 180 acres in 1907. I don't know who he purchased them from , who he sold them to
when he left or if he farmed them or not.

It is shown in the 1910 census that he and his wife evidently were 'landlord' & 'landlady' to a Hotel.
I checked the 1909 business listing for Britton...found 2 hotels, but neither were ran by them.
Would just a boarding house be listed? There was a Payne Davis who ran the Britton Hotel at the
time, but his name is also shown as Payne David in the same x ref listing.....no relation in either case,
that I am aware of.

I do know that my grandfather and his son ended up in Yellowstone Co., Montana where he
remarried (my grandmother) and had another son (my father) & daughter and became a wheat
farmer until the depression.....where he shows up on the 1920 cenus.

If possible I would like to find out any more information on the land that he purchased.....
Meridian 5, 127N, 056W, Sections 5 & 8.....(where that is in Marshall County)............more of a
history of what he did while in Marshall County, the hotel, etc....and rather or not his first wife,
Ella Davis died there or even why he left.

Can you help by supplying me with any further info or perhaps point me in another direction?

Also thank you for pointing out on the web page about the 'Find' feature within the browser...
I've always considered myself pretty computer savy and never knew that :-)

Thank you.

Hello Lowell,

My name is Steve Thole and I was wondering if you would have any information
on a Henry Thole that came to Hickman in the 1880's from Winthrop, MN? I
believe that he is the brother of my great-grandfather, Herman Thole of Glencoe,
Minnesota. I have run into a brick wall with that side of the family and think
that Henry Thole may be a link to more information. Some information about
Herman Thole. He was born in Meppen, Germany in 1856. He came to the U.S. in
1873 and ended up buying land in Winthrop in 1890. I did have information that
he had a brother that came over around the same time that ended up near
Langford, SD. But I wasn't sure of his name. The information I have on Herman's
parents are Louis and Catherina Thole who both died in Winthrop, MN.

Any information would be a great help.

Thanks,
Steve Thole

Note from Lowell:

Sorry to have been so slow in responding to you folks. I have attached a history
of Henry Thole from the 1986 Langford Centennial Book.

I knew Emil Thole. When I was about 5 years old, He lived in Langford while still
farming the Henry Thole Homestead. His son Dennis and I were fairly good friends
while growing up. Emil and Ruth divorced shortly after that and Ruth remarried so
Dennis Thole became Dennis Buffington. I haven't seen Dennis since the early 1950's,
but I believe he is currently living in Texas.

Emil lived to be around 100 years old and passed away a year or two ago. He was
still buying cows and lived on the farm until a short time before he died. A number
of sisters lived in the area, but I did not know any of them.

I will post your query on the Marshall County Gen site in a day or two and
maybe others will be able to provide more information.

Hello:

I'm curious why your website did not reflect the fact that there was a Welsh Presbyterian
Church in Spain, Marshall County from the years 1886-1900?. Your website seems to reflect
only churches where immigrants from Norway and Sweden attended. If there was a Welsh
Church in your county, there was a Welsh settlement.

I'm looking for further information on that Welsh settlement and that church. Do you
know of any historian in your county that could help me?

Reply from Lowell

Hi Annie,

Sorry we have so little information on Spain and the Welsh Community. We have a very
small amount of information on Spain at the Web site which can be accessed by clicking
on Spain.

Unfortunately most of us who volunteer on these Web Sites no longer live in the local
area. When I was going to school in Langford there was still a train stop in Spain and
a couple of families lived there. The train stopped in the 1960's and the last time
I drove by there was little or no indication of a town remaining.

My parents lived with one of the few Welsh people who I know about. His name was Rob
Hughs who had no children or relatives remaining when he died in the early '60s. There
were also some Williams families in the area who had some Welsh connection. There are
some Jones families who lived in the Spain area who were members of the Presbyterian
Church in Langford (which is the closest town to Spain), but it too is gone. The only
remaining church in Langford is a Lutheran Church.

I will post your request on the site and someone may know more about the Welsh Community.

I believe that somewhere on the website I read that Berenice Lesher was one of your teachers.
I have a great curiosity to know from someone who is still alive, what she was like.

I am a direct descendent from the Lesher family that moved there in the 1880's. I know there
are still Leshers there in the area. I have never contacted them so far.

My great great grandfather was John D. Lesher (usually wrote his name as J.D. Lesher. He bought
land in Day County about 1883 or 1884. His wife he moved there with was his 3rd wife. I am
descended from his lst wife. However all these people descended from him by any wife, I feel related to.

J.D. Lesher had the following children:

William "Frank" Lesher (my great grandfather)
Carrie
Adelbert (Berenice's father)
Eugene
Nellie (who married William Farrar a pharmacist there-their son Vere Farrar was also a pharmacist)
Lillian "Lilly"

So maybe you can understand why I would be curious about Berenice. I think she would be my great aunt.
I was just wondering what she was like. Also what she looked like. Was she tall, medium or short?
Was she skinny or medium? Did she have a pretty smile? Was she a sweet, kind person or was she kind
of stern because she was a teacher. Also I don't believe she ever married. On the death security index
it says she died in 1986.

She had her own piece of land. As she got older who helped her? Did she have animals? Did she drive a car?
These are the kinds of things I was wondering about. Do you have a picture of her, maybe on your school
class picture?

In the article she wrote about her family history, she mentions that most of her family are buried at
the Langford Cemetery. She doesn't mention whether her grandparents are buried there. Is Langford
cemetery very big? Do you know if it is well cared for?

I hope someday I can take a trip back there and walk through the town. I would look for her house and
her father's house. (Unless they are one & the same).

Hope to hear from you,

Linda Hawley in Tacoma, Washington
